Shyness – A very large proportion of the Irish population suffers from shyness to varying different degrees. Many people who come to my clinic for help to successfully overcome shyness are people who you’d never guess have this problem. My clients include students, stay-at-home Mom’s, general operatives, managers, business owners, sports personalities and even media personalities. What I’m saying is that shyness is common to all strands of society. Shyness is all about fear of being judged by other people or being perceived as strange, odd, not good enough, etc, etc.
Symptoms of shyness can be broken down into two main categories – external (observable by others) and internal (what you think or feel on the inside which of course are easier to hide). Not everyone who is shy will experience all of these but perhaps you might find some of your regular symptoms here – External Symptoms
- Facial blushing
- Tightness of the muscles
- Heart racing / palpitations
- Nausea or “butterflies” feelings
- Not speaking / trying to stay unnoticed / or speaking in a very low voice
- Not making eye contact
- Standing a distance away from the group
- Hands shaking / body trembling
- Feeling embarrassed / self conscious
- Mind racing / worrying (eg. “what if they think…..”)
- Fear of being rejected or excluded
- Fear of being judged / criticised / mocked by others
- Negative thoughts (eg. “why did I do that?”, “I’m so stupid”, etc.)
- Low self esteem
- Sadness / depression

Buried deep in your subconscious mind is a belief that underpins your shyness. I’m not sure where that began for you but for many people, they learned to believe that they should be very aware of other people judging them when they were children or teenagers. Perhaps that was as a result of what their parents told them or some embarrassing incident at school or maybe in a social situation someone made fun of them or pointed out how they were doing something wrong.
